How finishes change a garment

Once a fabric is knitted or woven, it can be treated with a finish that changes one specific property without changing the fibre underneath. Finishes explain why two garments in the same fibre can behave very differently, and each common finish comes with a real trade-off worth knowing.

Durable water repellent (DWR)

A surface treatment that makes water bead on the fabric rather than soak in. It sits on top of the fibre and wears off with use and washing — a DWR-treated jacket is noticeably less water-repellent after a season of regular wear than when new. Some DWR formulations use fluorinated chemistry; a "PFAS-free" version of the same finish is a distinct claim that needs its own documentation, not an assumption.

Wrinkle-resistant (easy-care) finishes

A resin-based treatment, often releasing small amounts of formaldehyde during application, that reduces creasing. Heavier application levels reduce the fabric's breathability and can stiffen its hand feel — the crease-resistance and the softness of the same fabric before treatment are genuinely in tension.

Antimicrobial finishes

Silver-based or quaternary-ammonium treatments applied to slow odour-causing bacterial growth. Both fade with repeated washing rather than lasting the life of the garment, and neither is a property of the fibre itself — it is added, and it can be removed by enough washing.

Softeners

A silicone-based softener changes hand feel without changing fibre content. It can build up over repeated washes and, in natural fibres, reduce how well the fabric absorbs moisture over time — a finish optimised for first-touch feel at the point of sale, with a longer-term cost in performance.

Dye classes

Reactive dyes bond to cellulosic fibres (cotton, viscose) and give strong wash-fastness; disperse dyes are used mainly on polyester. Dye chemistry is mostly a manufacturing-process concern rather than a finished-garment property, though some disperse-dye chemistries are restricted in some markets for skin-sensitisation risk in workers handling concentrated dye, which is a different question from wearing the finished, washed garment.

How we record this

We list finishes as their own field, separate from fibre content, and show whichever documentation a brand has provided rather than assuming a finish is present or absent by default.

What to look for

  • Whether a finish is disclosed at all — many product descriptions omit it entirely.
  • Whether a "free of" claim (PFAS-free, formaldehyde-free) has documentation behind it, since we require this before displaying the claim.
  • That a finish is a separate, removable layer, not a permanent property of the fabric.
